The Skeleton Coast: Spookyscapes That Give You the Chills. The sinister-sounding Skeleton Coast is exactly what the moniker suggests: spooky, surreal, foreboding, and eerie. This is a graveyard where death not only hangs heavy in the air but also lies around in plain sight, as if daring you to enter its bleak and ominous portals.
Giant whalebones litter the sandy beaches; they hark back to a time when the whaling industry did booming business here. But an even more foreboding sight is the rows of twisted and rusted carcasses of some thousand wrecked ships jutting out of their sandy deathbeds on the shoreline. It is a scene out of one’s wildest nightmares. Even the bravest soul will shudder at this deathly sight. Now listen closely; the air seems filled with the cries and wails of help of those unfortunate souls onboard these ships, many of whom probably stared at death as it approached them on that fateful day. The Skeleton Coast is one of the most hostile places on earth. But there is a strange contrast here. Even in the midst of the death scenes that litter the shores are signs of life and vitality. A certain stretch of the Skeleton coastline houses a colony of over 2,50,000 Cape fur seals. The bleak, desolate terrain is also home to elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, black rhinos, and hyenas.
