With clear blue ocean, white sand beaches and relaxed, waterfront restaurants, the Gili Islands are truly one of the most idyllic locations in Indonesia. Located just off the northwest tip of Lombok, the Gilis, as they’re affectionately known, have become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lombok. As tourism has grown on the islands, concern for eco-conscious tourism and taking care of the environment have become very important to locals.
The hardest decision you’ll have to make when going to the Gilis is which island to stay on. The largest and most glamorous of the three islands is Gili Trawangan or Gili T. Once known for its backpacker parties and young traveler vibe, there are now many more couples on a romantic getaway and luxurious hotels. Gili Air is the medium-sized island that has remained a little more rural with a strong flavour of local culture, but is growing by the day. Gili Meno is the smallest and least developed of the three islands, but you’ll easily find peace and quiet here. Many tourist's favourite aspect of the Gili Islands is that there is no motorised traffic. Other than walking and bikes, the only way to get from place to place is in a donkey-pulled carriage. The islands offer visitors many activities such as snorkelling, diving, free diving, yoga, massages and boat trips.
